Discovery of the Week: Cuenca, Spain

This post is part of a weekly feature called Discovery of the Week. By discovery, I mean a place, a custom or dish that is not widely known. See, I love to read travel magazines, websites and books. Very often, I find beautiful and interesting gems that not a lot of people seem to know about. That is why I thought about introducing this feature because I am sure it will expose a lot of astonishing places. Additionally, I enjoy learning about the many amazing places in the world. I believe my readers also enjoy this activity.

Discovery of the Week: Cuenca

Where it is located: In the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha in central Spain

What it is: A city famous for its hanging houses.  In 1996, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cuenca is located across a steep spur, whose slopes descend into deep gorges of the Júcar and Huécar rivers. It is divided into two separate settlements: the “new” city is situated south-west to the old one, which is divided by the Huécar course.  This is the reason why a lot of the houses in the city appear suspended over the cliffs edge (many houses were constructed in the 15th century).

The city’s medieval core is well conserved.  You can spend the day exploring the many noticeable buildings including the Main Cathedral.

Even though the city itself is worth a visit, the surrounding areas are full of natural wonders.  Cuenca is the capital of a province with the same name.  You don’t have to go far to find scenic valleys, gorges, and waterfalls.

I am not sure we can call Cuenca a “discovery”.  I assume a lot of people know about the city.  However, I wanted to feature Spain in this section in order to celebrate the country’s win in the Euro Cup.

The city is an easy day trip from Madrid. The journey time is only 50 minutes if the high speed train is taken.  However, consider staying more time in the area if you want to discover the natural landscaped of the province.
