5 of the Best Camping Spots in Australia

This article focused on the best camping spots in Australia!

Camping is one of Australia’s most prolific past times, with many people packing up the campervan or even throwing their swag in the Ute and heading off to their favorite camping spot for the weekend.

If you are holidaying in Australia and you want to explore the country, the easiest way is to hire a campervan in Australia, and then you can just head for the open road.

So if this sounds like the ideal vacation for your family, here are five of the best camping spots in Australia that you must try on your next campervan trip.

Table of Contents

  • The Great Ocean Road in Victoria
  • Mystery Bay in New South Wales
  • Rainbow Beach in Queensland
  • Carnarvon in Western Australia
  • Marion Bay in South Australia

The Great Ocean Road in Victoria

Johanna Beach on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria is absolutely beautiful. The scenery and the views over the ocean are spectacular and are really worth the drive down south. Nestled amongst the sand dunes, you can park your campervan on the grassy areas, which are adjacent to the surf beach, and simply take in all the stunning views. There is no drinking water or power available at some of these campsites, but for an overnight stay – you will be more than happy you made the extra effort.

Mystery Bay in New South Wales

Located in Narooma, this sleepy backwater area has been called ‘an embarrassment of spectacular beaches’. Here you can drive your campervan right up to the beach and park on the grassed areas under the trees. Again, many of these are non-powered sites, but the spectacular scenery, pristine beaches, and the turquoise water of the bay make it all worthwhile.

Rainbow Beach in Queensland

Famous for its colored sands, freshwater lake, and the Double Island Point lighthouse, there is so much to see and do in this small seaside town. There are plenty of powered sites available for a campervan and this is the perfect place to get away from it all. Relax and spend your days swimming in the crystal clear ocean and enjoy the time with your family and friends.

Carnarvon in Western Australia

If you want spectacular scenery, then Carnarvon ticks all of the boxes. The red coastal cliffs are breathtaking and the famous Monkey Mia (where you can interact with the wild dolphins) is not far away. The campgrounds offer powered sites and have plenty of clean utilities, as well as a pool and you are within easy reach of Shark Bay, Exmouth, Red Bluff, and Coral Bay. Carnarvon is definitely a beautiful camping spot in WA.

Marion Bay in South Australia

If you want a powered site in a lovely bush setting, close to the ocean with all the facilities you need, then Marion Bay is worth a visit.  This area has miles and miles of beautiful, pristine beaches, and coral reefs which are easily explored at low tide. If you enjoy swimming, diving, surfing, or fishing, then this spectacular bay must be right at the top of your list.

I went to Carnarvon as a kid and drove the the Great Ocean rode to see the 12 Appostles.

Now I would like tot take my son up to Exmouth and SharkBay but the 10 hour drive has put us off so far, and in saying that my son would love to do this road trip in a campervan.

I guess it is a trip that would require more planning and maybe a few stops on the way. I have driven 7 hours to reach a destination. We are going to try longer routes in the future.

We stayed 2 nights in our caravan. Large park, very clean amenities. Lots of grass areas, trees. One side of caravan park was close to boat ramp within walking distance. Beautiful sunsets looking towards Tin Can Bay. Take your Rid as there are midgies and sandflies. Thoroughly recommend for families and couples.
