JustFly’s Backpacking Tips for Beginners

Many travelers start off with visiting the most popular travel destinations around the world. Paris, Rome, Cancun, and Tokyo are prime examples. These wonderful locations each have something unique to offer.

But what if you want something different? Something a bit more unconventional? Then you go backpacking!

What exactly does “backpacking” mean? While definition varies depending on who you ask, the word backpacking essentially refers to the low-cost travel that involves carrying as little baggage as possible — hence the use of the term “backpack”.

Today, online travel agency JustFly helps beginner backpackers by listing down these backpacking tips.

  1. Choose a destination wisely

While no place is 100% safe, some places have lower crime rates than others. Also, if you only have 2 days off of work, then you obviously wouldn’t want to book a flight to a faraway mountain range in Nepal.  In terms of budget, always research about the cheapest accommodation and dining joints available.

  1. Only bring necessities

I cannot stress this enough. The soul of backpacking comes in packing only what is essential. Do you really need those four pairs of shoes, three pairs of jeans, and that 500mL shampoo bottle? If the answer is no (as it should be), then leave them. Also, don’t bring larger gadgets like your laptop. A smartphone and camera will do.

  1. Ask the locals

Don’t fall into the so-called tourist traps. These overly hyped places only suck your wallet dry. When backpacking, always ask the locals you deem trustworthy. These people are proud of their place and they are more than willing to show them off to outsiders. Moreover, the locals know more hidden gems that very few tourists get to see.

  1. Walk more

Not only is walking a great form of exercise, it will also keep you from spending too much on transportation. Taxi cabs may be convenient and fast, but they can also quickly drain your travel allowance.

Walking also provides you an opportunity to appreciate your surroundings. Instead of zooming past the hidden wonders of the town you’re visiting, why not stroll through them? Bring a camera while you’re at it and you might capture some truly captivating photos.

  1. Eat from local diners

Support local businesses! While the ubiquitous 7-Eleven may appear to be the most ideal go-to place for a quick meal, most of the food items sold there are overpriced. If you followed the tip #4 above, then you are bound to find local stores and eateries that offer bigger servings of food for a cheaper price.

  1. Have a backup plan

Whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or with a group, it’s always best to have a backup plan. Before leaving for your trip, inform your parents, siblings, or friends about where you’re going. Tell them the total duration of your trip and give them your contact details. If you’re backpacking abroad, have at least one photocopy of your IDs and passport, and keep the original stashed securely inside your bag. It is also important to keep some emergency money somewhere deep inside your baggage, in case the circumstances ask for it.

These tips may seem second nature to many travelers, but novice ones are bound to make a mistake or two. So keep these backpacking tips in mind and save yourself from cumbersome situations.

Excellent tips, especially to ask the locals what to see and do and to walk more.

Awesome tips! I never thought of backpacking until I got to New Zealand. Even though I’m way past those years, we stay in backpackers hostels on occasion. I do admire those who strike out on their own to see the country.

Great tips! I know I went walking (rather than taking the subway) in NYC and was shocked at all I had been missing just by being under ground instead of above. You can see and learn so much more about a city by walking around it, talking to locals, and enjoying the places that they enjoy. I can’t say much about the light packing though; that’s one I really struggle with. :-/
