This article shows the best of Puebla in 25 photos.
I stuttered while the agent was questioning me.
“Where are you going?”
“To Puebla,” I answered.
“What you want to see there?”
“Ahhh (few seconds lapse), the Cathedral, the Zocalo, the forts where the Battle of Puebla was fought.”
“How did you find about Puebla?” I started to get a bit nervous.
“(Another small lapse of time) Reading guidebooks and searching the Internet.”
The agent smiled, gave me my passport, and said, “Welcome to Mexico.”
I am not completely sure of why my tongue was so twisted at that moment. Maybe it was because I arrived in Mexico City at 5:00 a.m. (3 a.m. in Los Angeles) or maybe because it is truly difficult to describe what to do in city designed by angels.
Legend says the Bishop of Tlaxcala had a dream of where to build the city. He saw a beautiful, fertile valley crossed by a crystalline river. A group of angels came down from heaven and traced out the city. Convinced of what he saw, he went on a search for the specific place.
He declared he found the place not so far from Tlaxcala. The legend is the reason why the city was named originally Puebla de los Angeles (In reality, the bishop sent a letter to the queen of Spain exposing the need to have a settlement between Mexico City and the Veracruz port).
Even if you do not believe in legends, it is not difficult to acknowledge how special Puebla is. For some reason, you don’t hear a lot about people who visit the city. But man, what a place. The historic center is huge, the artistic offering is varied, the modern part is impressive and the food, ohh the food, is more than great. I want to cry just thinking about all I missed.
This post contains 25 photos of Puebla. I haven’t included captions because I want you to form your own opinion or write your own story about Puebla. Let me know what you think.

Feels like someone dropped me into the land of color. I loved that you offered no commentary…..allowing our imaginations to roam instead. Nice!

That is what I wanted by not including labels. Glad you liked it!

I love all of the photos! I first found out about Puebla earlier this year from friends who have been there. I became intrigued then and am even more so now!

I don’t know why Puebla does not get more attention. Without a doubt, it is a must if you want to know more about the history and gastronomy of Mexico.

Hi Ruth,
Really love these photos. I did not spend enough time in Puebla, you have given me reason to want to go back. If you even want to post them elsewhere, let me know.
Ruth says
Thanks Devin. I didn’t spent enough time either! I want to return soon.

Mexico is so full of colour – I love the chintzy cuddly toys! I’ve only been to Oaxaca in Mexico – looks like Puebla is a must-visit.

I went to Oaxaca too on this same trip. Keep tuned for stories about that state (and city).
